The Appalachian National Scenic Trail passes through Pennsylvania just north and
west of Harrisburg on its 2,174 mile long route along the Appalachian Mountains. The Trail follows ridgecrests
and valleys of the Appalachian Mountains from Katahdin in Maine to Springer Mountain in Georgia. The trail winds
through Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, Massachusetts, Connecticut, New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Maryland,
West Virginia, Virginia, Tennessee, North Carolina, and Georgia.
The Appalachian Trail opened in 1937. In 1968 it was designated as the first National Scenic Trail.
